Statistics point to the fact that millions of women and men experience some type of hair loss and 1 in 4 women suffer from come type of hair loss or thinning.  Hair loss or alopecia can be caused by genetics, hormones, hassle(stress), hunger(diet) hairdressing practices, medications and general health.

Here are some types and causes of Alopecia.

  • ​Androgen Alopecia most commonly known as genetic hair loss.  This type is most common in women and men.  As the word “genetic” implies, it is inherited from the family genes. Typically sons inherit from father and daughters from mothers. Treatments include but not limited to low laser light therapy and minoxidil. Lifestyle and dietary changes may be necessary also.

  • Alopecia Areata can be identified when smooth round patches are visible on any part of the scalp.  AA classified as an autoimmune disorder where the body begins to attack the follicles.  Extreme stressful conditions, allergies and infections are some causes can trigger this type of Alopecia. 

  • Alopecia Totalis is total hair loss on the scalp.  The causes of type of hair loss is still being researched.  Regrowth of hair may or may not occur.

  • Traction Alopecia is caused by damage to the follicle by constant pulling  and stress to the same area over and over again. TA is most often seen in those who wear tight ponytails, braids and extensions for prolonged periods of time.  TA conditions can be reversible if diagnosed early. Treatments may include but not limited to low laser light therapy, topicals and micro needling. ​

  • CCCA is a type of scarring alopecia where the follicles are permanently damaged. Overuse of harsh chemicals, trauma (burns, a blow to the head,) has been identified as  some of the causes. 

    • The word scarring indicates the regrowth of hair is not possible. Use of hair toppers wigs are options to consider

  • Telogen Effluvium  or diffuse hair loss is a non- scarring Alopecia. It can be characterized by excessive shedding over the entire head. This is caused by occurrences such as pregnancy, sudden change in diet and changes in health.
